Red Sox aim for four-game sweep of Orioles
Baseball Betting Lines
06/02/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - While Boston's 10-game road trip didn't get off to a great note, it sure can end on one. The Red Sox try to run their record to .500 on the trek, which ends tonight in the finale of a four-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
The Red Sox began their swing by getting swept in three games by the Athletics, getting outscored 17-6 in the series. After losing two of three to Seattle, Boston has responded with three straight wins over Baltimore.
Boston's offense has come alive during this four-game set, outscoring the Orioles 20-9 so far. That includes a 9-4 victory on Sunday that saw J.D. Drew smack a solo homer and drive in three runs.
One day after becoming the 24th player in major league history to hit 500 career homers, Manny Ramirez went deep again. He connected on a two-run homer and drove in three while extending his hitting streak to seven games. Ramirez is batting .379 (11-for-29) over his run with three homers and 10 RBI.
Bartolo Colon (3-0) benefited from the run support as he won his third straight start by giving up four runs on seven hits in six-plus innings of work.
If Boston is to sweep Baltimore in four games at Camden Yards for the first time September 20-23, 2002, it will likely try to do so without David Ortiz. Ortiz left Saturday's game with a sprained wrist and did not play yesterday. He is doubtful for tonight.
Tim Wakefield will try to end a personal three-decision skid with tonight's start. Wakefield, though, took a tough-luck loss last time out, giving up just a run and five hits in eight innings against Seattle, a game Boston lost 1-0. Wakefield also struck out eight while falling to 3-4 with a 4.70 earned run average this year.
In 31 starts and 13 relief outings against Baltimore, the right-hander is 14-13 with four saves in 4.24 ERA. That includes a 7-5 mark and two saves in 22 games (15 starts) at Camden Yards.
Jeremy Guthrie has lost each of his last three starts and will try to end that slide tonight for the Orioles. He hasn't pitched poorly in that time, allowing just five runs over a total of 20 2/3 innings, but Baltimore has scored a total of just three runs in his last three outings.
Against New York on Wednesday, the right-hander gave up three runs over seven innings of a 4-2 loss, falling to 2-6 on the season with a 3.64 ERA. His tough luck has also carried over to Camden Yards, where he is just 1-3 in six starts this year despite a 3.76 ERA.
Guthrie's last win this year came at Boston's expense on May 13, a 5-4 home victory. The righty allowed three runs (2 earned) on eight hits over six frames while striking out seven. In five career outings (4 starts) against the Red Sox, Guthrie is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA.
Baltimore's current seven-game homestand once looked promising, as it defeated the Yankees in the stand's first two tests. The Orioles haven't won since, losing four straight while racking up defeats in nine of their last 11 overall.
Luke Scott hit a two-run home run while Adam Jones added a pair of hits and an RBI for the Orioles yesterday. Brian Burres (4-5) was banged up for seven runs on 12 hits in just four innings of work.
Baltimore swept a two-game home set over Boston in mid-May, but has still lost 19 of its last 26 at home versus the Red Sox.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup
September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com. The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.
Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to name a few. Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR. They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.
The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer. Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
